Abstract

A recently discovered population of the White Bellbird (Procnias albus) in southern Amazonia is reported. Contrary to what was expected based on geography, morphological analyses positioned a collected specimen closer to the northern subspecies, whereas molecular data confirmed the lack of genetic structure reported previously for the species. Our data reinforces the notion that both subspecies of P. albus may not be diagnosable by morphological and molecular characters. The discovery of a Procnias albus population points to the need of more research to better understand patterns of avian richness and distribution in this region.
